II. Chapter 2: Matter and Its Properties

1. Classification of Matter

  • Pure Substances: Includes Elements (e.g., Chlorine, Copper) and Compounds (e.g., \(H_2O\), Salt).
  • Mixtures:
    • Homogeneous: Uniform throughout (e.g., Air, Salt Water).
    • Heterogeneous: Non-uniform (e.g., Dirt, Pizza).

2. Changes in Matter

  • Physical Change: Does not change the identity of the substance. (e.g., Boiling, Evaporating, Dissolving, Mixing, Freezing).
  • Chemical Change: Results in a new substance. (e.g., Rusting, Baking, Reacting).

3. Properties of Matter

  • Intensive: Independent of the amount of matter (e.g., Color, Taste, Density, Solubility, Conductivity).

III. Chapter 3: Measurement & Math Skills

1. Metric System

2. Significant Figures (Sig Figs)

  • Identification:
    • Zeros at the end of a number with no decimal are not significant (e.g., \(400\) cm has 1 sig fig).
    • Zeros at the end of a number with a decimal are significant (e.g., \(400.0\) cm has 4 sig figs).
  • Calculations:
    • Multiplication/Division: Round to the fewest number of significant digits.

  • Format: You must show work using unit cancellation for credit.
  • Density Formula: \(Density = \frac{mass}{volume}\) (Common units: \(g/cm^3\)).
  • Work Habit: Always include units and report final answers with the correct number of significant digits.

IV. Chapter 4: Atomic Structure

1. Scientists and Models

  • Thomson: Known for the "plum pudding" model and cathode ray tube experiment.
  • Rutherford: Known for the Gold Foil experiment; discovered the nucleus.

2. Subatomic Particles

  • Atomic Number: Number of protons (identifies the element).
  • Mass Number: Protons + Neutrons.
  • Isotopes: Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.

V. Chapter 5: Electromagnetic Radiation

1. The Spectrum

  • Longest Wavelength: Radio waves.
  • Highest Frequency/Energy: Gamma rays.
  • Speed: All forms of electromagnetic radiation travel at the speed of light (\(c\)).

2. Equations & Calculations
