Windows Update vs. WinGet distribution mechanism

Now that Edit is available in Win11 by default (🤘), it is not longer easily possible to use the WinGet distribution, as the System32 path takes precedence over the WinGet path.

I suspect that the Windows Update distribution will soon start lagging behind the WinGet distribution, as it does for other tools like cURL.

Changing the order of the system PATH to prefer the WinGet version is not always possible, and also not desired because it is a security risk.

Do you have any ideas?

No file or test is named. Start by reproducing the WinGet, Windows Update, and System32 PATH precedence behavior on Windows, then discuss the intended distribution mechanism with maintainers. Done should mean an agreed, documented approach for avoiding version conflicts without requiring unsafe PATH changes.
