Description
Many developers have external drives that they will clone their large repository onto. Some of these drives come pre-configured with 'Ignore ownership on this volume' set by default (or something sets it on their behalf) while some users are not in this configuration.
We've gotten reports of VFSForGit repos that are cloned on these volumes do not behave correctly. We should investigate how VFSForGit behaves on a volume like this and determine if it's a configuration that we want to support.

Research direction
No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by reproducing VFSForGit behavior on macOS volumes with and without “Ignore ownership on this volume” enabled, then compare the clone and repository behavior. Done means a clear compatibility conclusion and a defined recommendation about whether this configuration should be supported.
