Description

In #2481, @xth identified a performance issue in basic_filebuf's binary mode, but fixing it requires ABI-breaking changes, so we'll need to look into this during the vNext release.

vNext note: Resolving this issue will require breaking binary compatibility. We won't be able to accept pull requests for this issue until the vNext branch is available. See #169 for more information.

Research direction

Start by reading #2481 for the identified basic_filebuf binary-mode performance issue and #169 for the binary-compatibility constraints. This work is explicitly deferred until the vNext branch is available; done means resolving the performance problem there while accounting for the required ABI break.
