Description
I discuss this here. The zombie processes make it hard to use if it is called continuously. I reverted to piping to file and reading the output.

Research direction
Start by reading the popen implementation and the linked discussion, then reproduce the behavior when popen is called continuously. Done means repeated calls no longer leave zombie processes and the behavior is verified against the file-piping workaround described in the issue.
