Description
For start, - sry for my English.
I propose to replace gmscore.apk not with the microg itself, but with the mediator, which will imitate the current version of the stock gapps. You can make a graphic interface, where users can choose versions of the gapps manualy or put the checkbox "automatically" (then mediator can parse the actual version of the gapps via the Internet).
In this case, the mediator by default will unconditionally redirect all requests to the framework installed as a real MicroG application with own version etc.

Research direction
No files, tests, or entry points are named in the issue. Start by examining how GmsCore currently provides the gmscore.apk and how requests reach MicroG, then define the mediator, version-selection interface, and update behavior. Done would require an agreed design and implementation scope for this replacement.
