Research direction

First reproduce the failure with micro 2.0.4 while DISPLAY points to a remote IP with no X server, including the WSL/WSL2 setup described. Trace the startup path that handles DISPLAY and confirm that micro can still launch in the terminal when the X server is unavailable.
