Description

At the moment, there are API functions for retrieving the current columns and for changing the columns' sort order. What's not yet available is a function that lets you add or remove columns to be displayed. This is required to let plugin developers define (and use) their own columns for existing file systems.

Research direction

Start with the DirectoryPane.get_columns and DirectoryPane.set_sort_column API documentation linked in the issue, then locate their existing API implementations. Define the API needed for adding and removing displayed columns, including plugin-defined columns, and verify that plugins can use it with existing file systems.
