Description

Hi!
I've noticed there are several open tickets related to Android Auto functionality that seem to cover similar issues. To help with ticket management and make it easier to track these problems, I'm consolidating the reports here. If you can accept further help with tickets, please let me know, I happily try to assist.

This report aims to make a overview of all android-auto bugs so the developer @maxrave-dev has a possibility to work through the issues.

Why fix these bugs?

Android Auto represents a huge opportunity for SimpMusic. Car integration is becoming essential for music apps, and in my eyes one of th biggest pain-points of SimpMusic. When Android Auto works poorly, it's not just an inconvenience, it may be a turnoff for users, because when I can't use the app in my car, I esentially have to search another app that is working.

The 10+ open tickets show there's genuine user demand.

Problems:

  • Blank Main-Screen:
More Info:

Seems like SimpMusic is unable to render the main Frontend, the Playlist frontend works however

Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/317 and https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/711

  • App disappearing from Homescreen:
More Info:

Seems like SimpMusic is vanishing from the Android-Auto Homescreen.
The behaviour is really inconsistent, and I've yet to discover a pattern.

Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/336

  • Scrolling Playlists forces scrollback to top:
More Info:

When scrolling through a playlist in android-auto, for a brief moment it force scrolls back to the top, which is really annoying.

Suggested fix in RiMusic (Another Yt-Music client) https://github.com/fast4x/RiMusic/commit/615a4af0b78b581fa59a4a2b5b0bb529982dba5d

Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/837

  • Broken Microphone:
More Info:

When using the microphone button when searching for something, just nothings happens
Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/802

  • Lyrics:
More Info:

In Android Auto there is no Lyrics function displayed, and it seems to keep the phone always on which drains battery.
CrazyWolf13-EDIT: I don't think lyrics on a car display is worth implementing also due to safety reasons
Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/321

  • No favourites:
More Info:

There is no way to access the favourites-playlist in android auto
Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/808

  • Missing button to start playing a playlist:
More Info:

Currently there seems to be no way to really start playing a playlist in android auto, other can clicking the playlist, scrolling through it and clicking a single song and hoping it just plays that playlist.

Original Issues: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/740 and https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/369

  • Only local playlist playable:
More Info:

Currently it's only possible to play local Playlist on android auto, it would be much better if also remote youtube playlist could be played.

Original Issue: -

  • Search functionailty:
More Info:

Seems like SimpMusic is not showing video items like youtube music does.
With this I don't referr to actual videos, I mean like in youtube music where it shows videos with only audio stream playing, possibly music that was imported before they actually had built youtube music from youtube itself.

Original Issue: https://github.com/maxrave-dev/SimpMusic/issues/711

Issues to close in favour of this thread:

Please let me know @maxrave-dev if we can help troubleshoot this in any ways, e.g. by exporting any logs, sending screenshots or testing builds, I'd happily do so, to help getting the above issues fixed, and improve the UX of SimpMusic significantly.

Research direction

Start by reviewing the linked reports, especially issues 317, 711, 336, 837, 802, 321, 808, 740, and 369, and separate their Android Auto symptoms. The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Done would require independently reproducing and resolving the agreed subset of the listed behaviors, with focused validation for each.
