Description
It would be really nice to have the username format have a default domain. For example, for the official matrix.org, bridge, have foo_matrix.org@matrix.org (from XMPP) also be reachable at foo@matrix.org. It should be pretty easy to do -- just set a default domain -- and would make reaching Matrix users from XMPP entirely idiomatic for users on the same system that is running the bridge.
I don't have a solution to make the reverse direction more idiomatic, but one way is better than nothing.
Thanks for writing this!

Research direction
No files or tests are identified in the issue. Start by locating the username-format handling and configuration for a default domain, then trace the XMPP-to-Matrix address mapping. Done means a configured default domain makes foo_matrix.org@matrix.org reachable as foo@matrix.org without breaking existing addresses.
