Description
While current ipympl (0.9.3) works perfectly in Jupyterlab, it no longer works properly in a classic Jupyter notebook 6.5.2 from conda-forge repo. Has classic notebook support for ipympl been abandoned?

Research direction
No file or test is named. First reproduce the reported behavior with ipympl 0.9.3, classic Jupyter Notebook 6.5.2-6.5.4, and the conda-forge packages, then compare it with JupyterLab where it works. Done means the classic Notebook compatibility status is established and the observed incompatibility is either fixed with coverage or clearly documented.
