On December 4th, 2025, the a element was added to the MathML specification as an alias for the mrow element. The intention is to allow linking in MathML core eventually.

a elements should be treated as mrows.

Alternatives are described here https://github.com/mathjax/MathJax/issues/2860#issuecomment-3503424697 However, it would be better if the standard is supported without special config
