Research direction
Start with the reported chmod command and the path /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search on OS X 10.11. Investigate why the operation is rejected and determine the supported way to hide the Spotlight tray icon; done means the icon is hidden without the reported error.
