Description
We should add to the readme the platforms that are supported. My sense is they are:
- ubuntu `>=` 12.04 (with c++11 capable compiler and standard library)
- centos7
- `>=` OS X 10.10
@ericfischer - can you confirm this listing and build some mention into the docs?

Research direction
Start with the repository README and review the proposed Ubuntu, CentOS 7, and OS X platform list, including the C++11 compiler and standard-library requirement. Confirm the supported platforms before documenting the agreed list in the README. Done means the README clearly states the supported platforms and requirements.
