Summary

Every project should have a budget and cost tracking, specially if you're coming from a start up environment, where financial resources are scarce.

Why should this be worked on?

It is important for project managers to track not only the progress of the project, but also the cost associated with the project. I haven't seen (m)any project management tools that would offer budgeting, cost tracking and overview.

I'd love to have the functionality to track the project, cycle or module costs and have an overview of total costs, so you'd be able to optimize the costs and generate a report or export the costs to an ERP or finance management software. You'd be able to specify reoccurring costs (SaaS products, operational costs) and one-time costs (outsourced work, certification, etc). There is a concern regarding the cost visibility - not every member of the project team should have access to the cost breakdown. This would mean some roles would need to be introduced or at least visibility should be restricted to a set of members.
