Description
I think I've picked off most of the low-hanging fruit, performance-wise. To make good decisions about smaller performance tweaks, we really need a benchmark suite. I would very much prefer to borrow someone else's, if there's a good one out there, but we can write our own if need be.

Research direction
No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by reviewing the repository and evaluating whether an external benchmark suite can be adopted before deciding whether to write one; done means a benchmark suite is available for comparing smaller performance tweaks.
