Research direction

Start by locating `_make_model_distribution` and the code handling RLSSM likelihoods. Review how string and PathLike inputs are validated and how likelihoods are classified as `blackbox` or `approx_diff`; the issue does not identify tests or a precise expected behavior, so clarify the target with maintainers before making changes.
