Bug description

Animations of showing and hiding applets on the panel are really laggy after updating to the latest Cinnamon. 6.2.9 didn't have this issue.

This includes:

  • menu@cinnamon.org (animations are enabled in the settings)
  • calendar@cinnamon.org
  • notifications@cinnamon.org (maybe, but I think I saw that once, I'll try to check this later)

That's all I found for now. Other applets' animations are working fine. Rebooting or restarting Cinnamon didn't resolve this bug but reverting to the previous version did.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Turn on animations for the said applets (if they are disabled).
  2. Try clicking them to show/hide them and play their animations.
Expected behavior

Animations shouldn't be laggy.

Research direction

Reproduce the lag with menu@cinnamon.org and calendar@cinnamon.org on Cinnamon 6.4.0, with applet animations enabled, and compare the behavior with 6.2.9. Check whether notifications@cinnamon.org shows the same issue. Done means the affected applet animations are smooth after the regression is addressed.
