Description
I put the two roms in my system/fuse directory (I also tried them in the system directory) but when enabling the option in the core nothing is different. There should be a Speech System Copyright CURRAH 1983 message at the top of the screen (in 48K basic mode). Like this -
currah.rom (renamed it to uspeech.rom)
sp0256a-al2.bin (renamed to sp0256-al2.bin)
The roms work on standalone FUSE but require sp0256-al2.bin to be renamed to sp0256-al2.rom. Don't know if that makes a difference being a ROM instead of a BIN.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue with the Currah ROM files in system/fuse and with the core option enabled, then compare the behavior and required filenames with standalone FUSE. Inspect retroarch.log for resource-loading or speech-system errors. Done means the 48K BASIC screen shows the “Speech System Copyright CURRAH 1983” message and the speech system operates with the documented ROM files.
