Description

First and foremost consider this:

  • Only RetroArch bugs should be filed here. Not core bugs or game bugs
  • This is not a forum or a help section, this is strictly developer oriented

Description

Settings > Core > Allow cores to switch video drivers causes Dolphin and sometimes Mupen64plus and Mupen64plus-NX to crash upon launch of a game.

Expected behavior

Should not have any effect on the launching of games. Unless I'm wrong?

Actual behavior

Can cause crashes upon certain systems when launching games.

Steps to reproduce the bug
  1. Go into the Settings option on the main menu
  2. Go into the "Cores" option under Settings
  3. Turn on Allow cores to switch video drivers. It's not guaranteed that this will cause an issue but sometimes it can with Dolphin and the N64 cores all of a sudden, seemingly out of nowhere. I'm not sure about the other cores.
Bisect Results

It started happening just the other day. I haven't really changed anything. But suddenly when I tried to launch Gamecube roms with Dolphin, they wouldn't even start and Retroarch would crash. This also seemed to be the issue with certain N64 games on RetroPie & RetroArena.

Version/Commit

1.8.6, 1.8.7 and 1.88. Tried all three of those versions. May have been there on earlier versions as well.

Environment information
  • OS: Windows 10, also happens on Ubuntu Linux
  • Compiler: ?

Research direction

Start by reproducing the crash from Settings > Core with Allow cores to switch video drivers enabled, using Dolphin and the Mupen64plus or Mupen64plus-NX cores on Windows 10 or Ubuntu. Compare launching GameCube and N64 games across the reported RetroArch versions; done means game launch no longer crashes when this setting is enabled.
