Repository#head doesn't work according to documentation

#head ⇒ Object
Retrieve and resolve the reference pointed at by the repository's HEAD.
Returns nil if HEAD is missing.
But when i do this on an empty repository, I get:
Rugged::ReferenceError:
Reference 'refs/heads/master' not found
