Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points. Start by surveying the existing item-similarity algorithms and how they are currently called, then determine the scope of interfaces for computing similarities and finding most-similar items. Done means both requested interfaces are exposed with their expected behavior documented or tested.
