Create documentation in markdown files

Eventually we'll add this to my website, to show case open source documentation, but it will support markdown there as well.

No markdown files, tests, entry points, or specific documentation topics are named in the issue. First inspect the repository to identify the intended documentation scope and files; the work is complete only when a concrete set of useful Markdown documents and their intended website use are defined.
