Machine names should have less limited character set

Machine names apparently cannot contain many common characters, e.g. parens. That seems like an unnecessary and annoying restriction given that they are purely for visual purposes and do not ever need to be referenced (there is the ID) for that. The restriction is even weirder given that the name of the paper device (`Paper Key (desk athlete...)`) includes some of those restricted characters.

Locate the validation or entry point that restricts machine names, then compare its rules with the existing paper device name mentioned in the issue. Done means common visual characters such as parentheses are accepted while machine identification continues to rely on the ID.
