Update on Windows 8.1 keeps failing

First of all, I'd like to disable auto-updates. They close the app without any prior warning, which is bad UX. Is there any way to do that?

Anyway, the actually issue is that it can't install the update because the WIX installer falsly claims another installation (of what) is currently running.

System is a Windows 8.1 (Version 6.3.9600)
