meta issues - verbosity

Verbose on/off should not change what a function returns. It should just print additional information.

`pretty_lists` might need a replacement.

This is a meta issue that affects a bunch of functions. To be addressed once we port over all the major functions to v2 (which is a bigger priority)

Start with pretty_lists and the major functions still awaiting the v2 port. Verify that toggling verbosity leaves each function's return value unchanged while only adding output; completion spans the affected functions after the v2 migration.
