Description

I was thinking about a Variable Explorer in Jupyter that is similar to that of Spyder. Sure, there are other techniques or extensions which could provide this but I feel that this feature is one of the most distinguishing feature between Spyder and Jupyter. It would be easier to check the variables and its values rather than typing and printing it. This feature could be of a good use. This could be added maybe on the left side like how Google Colab has an explorer related to Google Drive. I am sure many such requests have come before. So if it is not yet approved, may I know why or what could be holding it back?

Research direction

No files, tests, or entry points are identified. Start by reviewing existing Jupyter Notebook extension approaches and the Spyder and Google Colab examples described in the issue. The work is not ready to start until the explorer's scope, placement, supported variables, and completion criteria are agreed.
