Research direction

The issue names Jupyter and Julia 1.0.3/1.1 but no file, test, or entry point. Start by reproducing the kernel error after the Julia version change and inspect how Jupyter selects the Julia kernel; done means Jupyter uses Julia 1.1 without the red kernel error.
