Render latex algorithm environment

I'd like to include an algorithm latex section in my markdown document, how can I do that?

I tried unsuccessfully to use the preamble 'header-includes' as per https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/452552/algorithm-pseudocode-in-markdown

I am using these software versions on a Linux machine:
gitit version 0.12.2.1
pandoc 1.16.0.2
Compiled with texmath 0.8.4.1, highlighting-kate 0.6.1.
