cannot read superscript,subscript and other special characters like root sign

i have made a script were in i upload my xls file and displat it's content in
grid form...here i have came across an issue where am unable to display
superscript,subscript and other special characters like root sign etc.. on my
webpage. It instead shows '???' in place of the characters
```

Reproduce the issue with the attached PhysicsDec2012.xls file and trace how its superscript, subscript, and root-sign characters are read and displayed on the webpage. Done means those characters appear instead of '???'; the payload does not name a source file or test to run.
