Whole Foods requires ID to purchase non-alchoholic beverages

Today I was at Whole Foods and picked up four items, a 12 pack of Partake non-alcoholic brew, Jeni's sweet cream ice cream, a pineapple, and a half loaf of bread. I was in a bit of a rush because the ice cream was melting and I had another stop on the way home. At the cashier, I asked if I could purchase the non-alcoholic beer outside the beer/wine section, and they confirmed I could. But then they asked for my ID.

Mind you, I'm above 50 years old and presumably there's no age limit for buying non-alcoholic beverages.

I have my drivers license and passport imported into a id.me app, as well as having a US Digital ID in my Apple Wallet. I also have a copy of my drivers license scanned (front and back) on the phone. I asked if they could take my digital ID or a photo of my ID, but they could not.

My only option was to leave my groceries at the checkout, head down to the garage, retrieve my ID from the car, return to the cashier, and wait for the person ahead to finish their checkout, all while my ice cream sits outside the freezer absorbing heat.

And all of this from a company that's had my personal data since 1997. They literally don't need to see my ID to know I'm at least 28 years old.

Whose fault is this clumsy process? Is it Whole Foods? Amazon? Commonwealth of Pennsylvania?
