Simpler UI?

Is there any option to dispense with the popup window as it causes more problems than it's worth.

Specifically:-
- the ctrl keys don't appear to function
- it's not obvious how to cherry pick the diffs into my own code
- after closing the window I am left with a black hole where it was displayed and I need to reload my editor to recover
- after closing the window I get a bunch of error messages whenever I try anything else
