Attempting to boot an Ubuntu rootfs

I am currently trying to boot from an Ubuntu rootfs, more specifically this one:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-base/releases/18.04/release/ubuntu-base-18.04-base-i386.tar.gz

It imports fine in iSH, however booting will fail with error -2. I assume this is because the init command is wrong. I tried changing it, but that feature (which I requested in #172) seems to have gone away in the meantime.

Is my approach right/is this feasible?

Start by reproducing the import and boot attempt using the Ubuntu 18.04 i386 rootfs linked in the issue, recording where error -2 occurs. Check the current init configuration and compare it with the earlier configurable-init behavior referenced by issue #172; done means determining whether this rootfs can boot and documenting or fixing the required approach.
