The industry is already embracing this momentum, seen in Valve’s push to bring Linux Mesa RADV drivers to Windows and NVIDIA open-sourcing its Linux GPU kernel modules. By adopting a hybrid framework that opens userspace stacks (UMDs) and HAL layers while maintaining secure proprietary kernel modules (KMDs), Intel can invite developers and enterprises to collaborate on real-time debugging and performance improvements. This community-driven approach naturally extends the lifespan of older hardware, easing internal maintenance demands for legacy platforms while keeping devices viable longer. Aligning Windows with Intel's trusted Linux architecture would earn immense developer goodwill, establishing Intel as the absolute gold standard for system integrators and researchers. Ultimately, pioneering an open driver ecosystem on Windows builds a collaborative, future-proof platform that benefits the entire PC ecosystem.
