Research Possibilities for Email Alerting Functions with the Application

We would like to research what email alert functionality we could deploy with-in our application. This will require defining metrics that we would like to alert on, investigating the source of those metrics and validating our ability to query them, defining an email delivery mechanism, mocking out the opt-in and email configuration options in the UI and defining success criteria.
