Research direction

Start by reading SelectionCoreImpl and SelectQueryImpl, then trace how the first series offset is validated and how subclass visibility is enforced. Confirm the intended behavior for an offset of 0 and whether external subclassing is supported; done means the behavior and API decision are clearly documented or consistently implemented.
