Benchmark VFS write performance

At some point, we'll want to benchmark how VFS writes perform so we can try to improve their performance. This ticket will track that future work.

Search the repository for the VFS write implementation and any existing benchmark harness. Determine how VFS writes can be measured reproducibly, then add a benchmark and record a baseline so future performance work can compare against it.
