Connecting my LMS Hypothesis account with one that works elsewhere

This issue is not scoped for the current work, but I wanted to document the issue early.

As I understand it, LMS Hypothesis accounts will only work within the domain of a particular instance of an LMS. That is, just at the URL for where that instance lives: "university.LMSprovider.com."

For lots of reasons, this will please admin at universities, because they have more control over the users/use of Hypothesis as a third-party tool.

But both for our own benefit--increasing use of Hypothesis and annotation on the Web--it'd be great if these users used our tool beyond the LMS whether with the same accounts or new accounts associated with their LMS accounts.

There are a few scenarios we can imagine in which this is desirable, so I'm outlining those use cases here:

1) As a teacher, I'd like to use my current Hypothesis account within my courses in the LMS my school is using.

(This will at first be a majority of instructor users since we'll be working largely with current H users, LMS beta app testers, to expand their use of H in the LMS. They'll have H accounts already, and will have annotations, course groups, etc. associated with those accounts.)

2) As a student, I'd like to use my current Hypothesis account within my courses in the LMS my school is using.

(There won't be too many of these initially, I don't think.)

3) As a teacher, I'd like to continue using Hypothesis beyond my LMS.

a) This might be as part of annotation projects on other platforms also associated with my school, like the Web, or a CMS like WordPress.

b) This also might just be in my personal or professional use beyond teaching. That is, I love this tool, and want to start taking notes with it on articles I read for my scholarship.

4) As a student, I'd like to continue using Hypothesis beyond my LMS.

a) For other academic work on other platforms my school uses, whether this is assigned work (my teacher wants me to annotate on my WordPress blog) or by personal choice (I'd like to continue to take notes using Hypothesis on my own and have those notes associated with my work in earlier courses.)

b. This also might just be in my personal or professional use beyond school.

In my opinion, it it the last two scenarios (3 + 4) that are the most important to address. I realize there's already been lots of discussion and scheming on this issue as it pertains to publisher partnerships like eLife. Just wanted to add this to the conversation.
