How to get safe mode with live boot

Description

I tried:

1. `unset boot_mute`
2. `unset beastie_disable`
3. `boot -v`

– hoping for the FreeBSD boot loader menu, from which I would have stepped into the boot options menu, i.e.

No boot loader menu. In the absence of this, how can I get safe mode?
