question: why default location of a VF must be a master itself?

Hi
(I hope I'm not mistaken about all these)
why default location of a variable font must be a master itself? I mean you can't define point of an instance(or any other points except masters) to the axes default locations. it cause some limitations.
Is there any way to do that or a any plan to add this ability?
