Feat: image volume digesting (K8S 1.35 beta enabled, 1.36 GA)

Raising this feature issue/MR to cover off handling image volumes.

There are a few things added which are not totally dry and I am willing to add an extra refactor but initially wishing to keep the changes more obvious.
