Material+Symbols vs Material+Iconss

Good afternoon,
my question relates with
https://github.com/google/fonts/issues/9836
This was close before 3weeks and nobody answered me to my question there.. Now I have a few time to do migration from icons to symbols, so I would like to do it but...
I would like to ask, if it is possible to migrate to Material+Symbols from Icons, and still use tag mat-icon tag in my html pages? Currently I am using it this way

or do I have to rewrite mat-icon tags to span tags?.
In head I have

I did not find any way to use **mat-icon** tag with Material+Symbols in head
**span** tag with Material+Symbols worked for me.
