Summary

Install 4.5 Budgie on Solus. Updated. Display broken, displays text, does not initialise X.

Steps to reproduce
  1. Install Solus 4.5 Budgie
  2. Update
  3. Reboot (I habitually reboot with the new Kernel before installing Nvidia driver. Think it comes from using Gentoo years ago)
  4. Install Nvidia Driver via the GUI
  5. Reboot
Expected result

It installs, the distro is updated, I can use the HWDrivers app to install Nvidia drivers, which require a reboot afterwards.

Actual result

After updating it boots, but is in text mode, e.g. X does not start. Very chunky text, can log in etc., everything seems to be working, but you can't start the GUI

Other comments

The system appears to work properly. It is fixable by rebooting into the Kernel installed from the image (e.g. pre update) and running the HWDrivers app from that. I don't know what happens if you install the nvidia drivers immediately after the updating, without a reboot. Not even sure if this is advised.

I have a very similar slightly older system with a 2080 Graphics card which installs normally (one is for work, the other for X-Plane). I think it's connected with the graphics card & Nouveau maybe ? The install is perfectly normal other than this problem with the post update reboot.

This (problematic) system requires NoModeSet to be visible on boot. The other system does not.

Research direction

No source file or test is named. Start by reproducing the Solus 4.5 Budgie install, update, reboot, and HWDrivers Nvidia-driver sequence, comparing the pre-update and newly installed kernels. Done means the updated system boots into the graphical X session and allows Nvidia driver installation followed by reboot.
