Backup and restore of. grav website. Is there a reliable way to do this?

I've tried zipping the whole grav installation and unzipping to another location. But I can't get a good restore because **a lot of the configuration settings and all the pictures are somehow lost on the journey**. The problem is highly repeatable. I am not willing to use the content manager's backup and restore, because (1) if the backup and restore misfires, you've destroyed the website. and (2), if the site goes down for any reason, there is no site manager restore function left to restore the site. Is there a simple strategy (and a test strategy so I can confirm that it works) to give me the confidence to carry on learning and building in grav?

No files or tests are named.
