Menu items do not work if they are wired to the first responder

I'm porting an app from Mac to GNUstep where menu items invoke actions on a view controller that is set as the first responder.

Looks like the Menu completely disregards those menu items: they stay gray and inactive. Sometimes Menu crashes and if that happens and Eau will displays the menu locally, then all of the menu items begin to work.

I'm not sure if it's a bug with Eau or with Menu, please let me know if this is not appropriate. If you give me a few pointers I'll try to dig in to help fixing this.

Start by reproducing the GNUstep app case where menu items target a view controller through the first responder, then compare the behavior of Eau and Menu, including the reported crash. Done means those menu items become active and invoke their actions reliably without requiring the menu to be displayed locally.
