Description
## Problem Description
I’m looking for a compact 2-3U hard drive bay solution for NAS use, similar to the IcyDock FatCage. The challenge is managing cabling to support power and multiple SATA connectors (e.g., 5x SATA). The current options often require a tangle of SATA and power cables, which is not ideal for clean and efficient setups.
Potential Applications: Home labs and small-scale media server setups.
## Desired Solution
It would be great to have a hard drive bay solution that integrates with modern high-density cabling standards, such as SFF-8644. This would allow me to utilize a PCI-E HBA card with external SFF-8644 ports to manage data connectivity in a much cleaner and more scalable way.
## Wish List
Key Features Desired:
• Compact Form Factor: Fits within 2U or 3U rackmount enclosures.
• High-Density Connector Support: Utilizes SFF-8644 ports for connectivity to reduce cable clutter.
• Power Management: Streamlined power cabling for all drives. Ideally one AC input.
• Drive Capacity: Supports >2 drives (3.5” or a mix of 3.5”/2.5”).
• Toolless Drive Installation: Optional but preferred for ease of use.
## Additional Context
The IcyDock FatCage and similar products offer a great starting point, but their reliance on multiple SATA cables for individual drives creates complexity in terms of both cabling and airflow. Integrating an SFF-8644-compatible solution could significantly enhance usability and reduce setup challenges.
If there’s an existing product or work-in-progress feature that aligns with this request, I’d love to know more! The best thing I can come up with right now is a QNAP TL-D400S JBOD, but there's got to eventually be a better solution.

Research direction
This is a hardware and product-selection request rather than a code change; the issue names no repository files, tests, or entry points. Start by reviewing the requirements for 2–3U fit, SFF-8644 connectivity, power, and drive capacity, along with the cited IcyDock FatCage and QNAP TL-D400S. The issue does not define a repository-based completion criterion.
