Description
In the past I have used inexpensive 19" wall mount racks that are 2U-10U high when doing telecomm installs and install 1U patch panels, a network switch, a 1U short server case, a shelf to hold a modem/UPS, etc.
This new 10" ecosystem would be an ideal replacement for that, I just need to be able to hang it on the wall.
Here is my idea: use a french cleat system to hang these on the wall. Probably aluminum (but painted steel might work) strips. One long one that mounts to the wall, two "tabs" that mount to the sides of the rack.
Many wall cabinets already use this system, there might be existing off the shelf brackets one could purchase.
When using this sort of system it is best if the wall side of the cleat can span multiple studs in the wall. But in the 10" rack case we're more narrow than standard stud spacing! (In the US 16" or 24" on-center). To deal with this I can think of a couple options:
- make the wall side longer (18" or 26") so it can attach to two studs. the rack could hang anywhere along the span and then the extra would stick out the sides. (potentially you could make even longer and hang multiple racks side-by-side)
- make the wall side taller, to allow for multiple fasteners into the same single stud
- install some sheet good (plywood, etc) on the wall across multiple studs, then attach cleat system to that
If a manufacturer wanted to produce actual wall mounted 10" racks that would be cool too! Some of the 19" ones I like have a hinge on one side so the whole unit can swing out which makes install and maintenance way easier (and would work better for building cable runs than a cleat system since you don't have much slack).
