Description
I'm looking for a way to fit a 1u NAS in a 10" rack (I'm using Lab Rax design by Michael Klements). I know this does not leave much space for drives, so I'm thinking a simple mirrored pool of two 2.5" SSD drives plus another for boot (could be M.2 or 2.5") If by utilizing the depth of the rack we could find room for a 3rd 2.5, that would be amazing. That entails a design that would require removal from the rack for maintenance; that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make. Also, cooling might be tricky. I'm putting a 120mm fan in the back panel of the rack, so that should help. But for general community use some dedicated cooling might be in order.
TrueNAS Scale is my preferred software, so I'm assuming we'd build around an x86 machine.
Use case is in a mini rack at a local non-profit institution for their audio recordings, so it need not be a high-performance machine. But.. if it performs well enough and is stable I'd consider one for at home, too.
What are your thoughts?
