Description

I have been always tortured by the dust in the air that attaches to the internal faces of network devices, while make the heat spread slower and performance goes down. (Me personally a Unifi device heating victim)

After been introduced this project at Xiaohongshu, I designed:

> - a design of mini rack of aluminium extrusions that using the Air Filter for Tesla Model Y for cleaning the air, with several fans to distribute airflows (provided two versions of open front and covered front), handles 6 holders

> - two holders that would suit Unifi Cloud Gateway Max and NanoPi R5s, each holder have two fans of 4*4*1cm to push the air through

All mentioned above haven't been printed and tested but designed with accurate measurement, they should work theoretically, I plan to print and verify them by the end of October 2025.

Design of aluminium extrusions performed on MayCad by MayTec, an extraordinary efficiency software for designing anything based on aluminium extrusions. Holder design performed on Shapr3D by Siemens on iPad. it feels so smooth and direct for design 3D objects on iPad with Apple Pencil.

I was planning to control fans with home assistant, using the sensor data from Unifi integrations to decide when open the fans or close. NanoPi R5s runs openwrt, I wrote a shell script to obtain the temperature and report to home assistant, so its fan would also be controlled based on its own temperature.

There may be gaps where air can leak, so I plan to use silicone sealant or tape to seal them during actual assembly.

## Using:

1. Open the little door at the left side, put two fans of 12*12cm (depth less than 3cm) in the **inner frame** (space of 24*12cm for two fans of 12cm) to create negative pressure from the inside, using some silicone sealant or plasticine make sure the fan won't move when working
2. Put the Tesla Air Filter in the **outer frame** (space of 24*14*3cm, exactly the size of Model Y's air filter). This may won't need further actions to secure.

> Please choose your own ways of controlling fans, its easy to find PWM fan controller for DC fans with PWM, find some space with the aluminium bones, sort the cables

I also designed a **universal holder** that might be suitable for most device, with air flow tunnel, space for two 4cm fans provided.

More devices could be adopted in the holder, then managed in the rack, enjoying clean air, for example:

- an 12V DC UPS unit - using lithium polymer batteries , providing all power for devices on this rack, maybe some PD power adapter as well after the UPS 12V DC output for providing power to Unifi devices, instead of AC power delivery unit, while provide more robustness for electricity waves.
- a specific air flow tunnel, to lead the clean air out of the rack to larger devices, such as Synology NAS, print a shell for guide the air in.

By the way, if the fan used is strong enough (make sure power, cable and controller is strong enough), this could simply be a Air Purifier, could choose standard filter or HEPA filter, even third party filter. The size is just so fit.
