Using Sketch export as reference

Hello, I started looking into BackstopJS last week to help with prototype development and was wondering if an exported png from Sketch could serve as a reference image. I don't know what goes into the diffing process, but thought this would be helpful in flagging differences with the design file. Does anyone with Sketch experience have any insight on whether this is possible? Thanks!
